LONDON EXPLORER
DAY
London has such a lot to offer that a day is
hardly enough to take it all in:
 |
-
Westminster Abbey - rebuilt over
several hundreds of years, Westminster Abbey distils 1000 years of
British history and is amongst the most interesting examples of
early English Gothic architecture. It has been the place of every
Coronation since 1066 and it is also sheltering the shrine of St
Edward the Confessor, the tombs of kings and queens but also of
poets and writers like Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, John
Dryden, Tennyson, Robert Browning, Charles Dickens, and numerous
memorials to famous people.
-
Buckingham
Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain's
sovereigns since 1837. It is only recently that Her Majesty the
Queen has decided to spend more time at Windsor Castle and before
that most stately events were held at Buckingham Palace.
-
Clarence House was the London residence of
The Queen Mother, of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh and is
currently the residence of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall
(just like Buckingham Palace, Clarence House is open to the public
during the summer months);
-
Kensington Palace,
birthplace and childhood home of Queen Victoria, the palace is also
associated with other personalities, such as Princess Margaret and
Princess Diana
-
the Tower of London,
founded by
William the Conqueror, is 'by far one of the most famous and best
preserved historical buildings in the world'. Over the years it has
served many purposes such as: royal
palace, state prison and execution site
and also safe keeping place
for the Crown Jewels;
-
Shakespeare's Globe,
-
Madame
Tussauds,
-
the London Eye,
-
the Oxo Tower,
-
The
National Galleries,
-
Tate Britain,
-
the British Museum,
-
Harrods,
-
Greenwich and so many more......
